Safety is often pushed to the wayside due to its associated costs. However in this case it would have paid to be safe. Southern California Gas Co. failed to replace a safety valve that was removed from an L.A. well over 35 years ago. Local residents were forced to leave and many are reportedly sick. They have since "lawyered up." If So Cal Gas Co. would have simply installed the necessary safety valve they would not be involved in a law suit, but more importantly California residents would be healthy and home safe. Instead, the company is now facing public scrutiny as well as litigation.
